Toondah Harbour set to become a fishing paradise

Recreational fishermen will have prime, waterfront access to cast a line under plans to make the new Toondah Harbour a fishing hot spot for the Redlands Coast.

As the southern gateway to Moreton Bay, Redlands Coast is one of the most sought after fishing locations in Queensland.

However, at present, there is limited access for land-based fishing in our area.

To support recreational fishermen, the new Toondah Harbour will improve onshore fishing access and feature a range of new boating facilities, including a recreational marina, public pontoon and platforms for land-based fishing.

The new marina also has the potential to increase habitat diversity and attract more fish species.

As part of the master plan proposal, the current boat ramp at Emmett Drive will be relocated and new facilities introduced. There will also be 1.5 kilometres of boardwalks, nature and heritage trails.

Recreational fishing has taken place in Moreton Bay for more than 130 years and Walker Corporation will protect and sustain the biodiversity of the region while providing a prominent fishing and recreational attraction.

Bond University Associate Professor of Environmental Science Daryl McPhee said the plans for Toondah Harbour would significantly improve local fishing options.

Professor McPhee’s book, Environmental history and ecology of Moreton Bay, looks in depth at the habitats, fisheries and European history. He enjoys a long association with Moreton Bay, having studied the local environment and fished there for more than 30 years.

“I am out on the water frequently and have a practical knowledge and passion for Moreton Bay,” he said.

“Having studied commercial and recreational fishing in the Bay, I’ve looked at what the project can do to improve recreational fishing access, particularly land-based access.

“Currently in that location, there isn’t a lot of access for recreational fishermen. The project, with suggestions I have put forward, will greatly enhance the experience for land-based anglers.”

Our $1.4 billion investment in Toondah Harbour will create an exciting new Redlands destination with a wealth of recreational pursuits while also respecting and conserving the local environment.

Integrating nature and lifestyle through innovative and sustainable community facilities, including green open spaces, heritage trails, foreshore parklands and social gathering areas, Toondah Harbour supports a brighter local future for the Redlands Coast.
