Meet urban designer Craig Addley, the creative mind behind the vision for Toondah Harbour

Growing up in the Redlands, Toondah Harbour urban designer Craig Addley has a strong connection and love for the bayside but a lack of jobs, amenities and infrastructure sent him packing for the city as a young adult.

As an Alexandra Hills High old boy and having studied town planning at Queensland University of Technology in the 1990s, Craig has a vision to transform Toondah Harbour into a world-class destination, breathing new life into the region.

“I have very fond memories growing up in the Redlands and would ride my bike from Alex Hills to Wellington Point with friends. On weekends, Mum and Dad would drop us down at the Straddie flyer so we could spend the weekend over there surfing,” he said.

“I was always very passionate about drawing and in my senior year won the award for graphics. After completing Year 12, I studied town planning and urban design.

“I left the Redlands as a young adult due to the lack of employment, education and entertainment opportunities. It was common for young people to leave the area after school as there wasn’t a lot in the region that catered to our needs.”

Marrying the girl next door and being part of a large sailing family that spends a great deal of time on the bay, Craig still has strong ties to the Redlands and hopes to move back to the area one day.

As the creative mind behind the vision of the new Toondah Harbour, Craig has used his love and local knowledge to lead Walker Corporation’s design of the proposed development.

He believes Toondah Harbour will be the turning point to creating a new identity for the region that caters for both young and old alike.

“There just isn’t enough foot traffic throughout Cleveland and many shop owners in the CBD are feeling the effects. For local businesses to stay afloat they need tourism and visitation,” he said.

“The Redlands has an incredibly unique opportunity to reinvent itself and become the next Cabarita seaside village. We also see what they created at Townsville Esplanade and the tourism it has generated and know that we have that same opportunity in Cleveland.

“With my strong personal ties to the Redlands, it would be great to create opportunities and amenities that cater for younger people so that they don’t feel  they need to leave the region to have a great life.”

Toondah Harbour provides a fantastic opportunity to support connectedness, interaction, and creativity – a place that welcomes and supports the lifestyle requirements of young residents and families.

The new Toondah Harbour is forecast to create 1,000 jobs annually over its expected 15-20 construction life, but its key economic value may well be in transforming the economy and productivity of the Redlands to create a world-class liveable destination.
